      Newcastle WA Tidbits

Newcastle may have only been incorporated a quarter-century ago, but the city played an important role prior to its 1994 incorporation. Since the late 19th century, Newcastle was essential in the further development of its geographic neighbor, Seattle. The town was once a coal mining territory and its connection to Seattle was the very first railroad in King County.

The city's coal mining industry started during the 1870s, but the first coal was unearthed along Coal Creek in 1863. Philip H. Lewis and Edwin Richardson discovered the abundance of coal while surveying the area. Around 75 to 100 tons of coal per day were produced the collected coals were delivered to Seattle.

This development helped fuel the Port of Seattle and brought newer railroads to the city, most especially the Great Northern Railway. There were over 13 million tons of coal mined until it stopped operating in 1963. Throughout history, Newcastle was known for its mining industry, but did you know that it was named after a city in England? Newcastle was named after a place called Newcastle upon Tyne, which was also recognized to be a coal mining town.

Newcastle officially became a part of King County's growing number of cities on September 30, 1994. After that, Newcastle became a bedroom community for those who work at the neighboring areas like Renton, Bellevue, and Seattle. Many residents enjoy the magnificent view of Lake Washington from their elevated properties.

Popular attractions - like the Newcastle Golf Course - are strategically located at a hilly terrain. Thus, providing a picturesque view of Bellevue, Seattle, and Mercer Island. Other prominent attractions in Newcastle are: Lake Boren Park, Family YMCA, and The Golf Club.

With nearly 40 acres of developed parks, Newcastle has many trails and amenities to enjoy. The city created a trail system for residents and visitors to actively use. The trails are systematized by volunteers and these trails are combined into newly developed houses and parks. The Newcastle Trails will lead to Lake Washington if you head west and linked to the Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park if you travel east.

Aside from the unified trail system, Newcastle's main attraction is the Lake Boren Park. This community park measures 20.2 acres and it is equipped with recreational amenities like two tennis courts, a basketball court, and volleyball court. There's also a play area for kids, picnic shelters, and a fishing dock.
